SILK – “SEE THE SUN” (ACOUSTIC DEMO SESSIONS)

Silk Acoustic Demos Review

SILK – “SEE THE SUN” (ACOUSTIC DEMO SESSIONS)

I hadn’t heard of local Portsmouth band Silk prior to receiving their acoustic demo sessions. It’s probably worthwhile mentioning then, that there are some lazy music journalist comparisons on the way. Albeit justified in my humble opinion and certainly well-intended!

Back when Oasis first came about in the mid-90’s, I never really got it, whereas now there’s no denying “Definitely Maybe” is an absolute classic. However, despite being a rock ‘n roller my ears were always firmly in the Blur camp of that college-days argument…

High-Flying Birds

Since then, you can easily recognise a Gallagher influence a mile-off and Silk are no different. Even with Noel growing into a league of his own with High Flying Birds, the sheer arrogance of Liam has still kept him somewhat of an “iconic” figure (amongst other things).

As such, when it comes to Silk if there’s not at least one major Oasis fan within the group I’d be mighty shocked. Although as well as the Gallagher brothers, you can also trace the indie influences back to the likes of the Charlatans or Stone Roses. Incidentally, I can’t wait until the Charlatans frontman, Tim Burgess, plays the much-delayed gig at the Wedge in September (alas I digress).

Silk Acoustic Demos

SILK – “ACOUSTIC DEMO SESSIONS”

The bedroom recordings get off to a glorious start on the Acoustic Demos Sessions.

Whereby the production quality on “See the Sun” making it sound as if it could almost be the finished article. With this in mind, the opener is also clearly my favourite tune on this collection.

Having said that, you’ll have to imagine a full band to envisage how the likes of “Let it Loose” or “Start Again” will ultimately turn out. Although the groundwork is certainly set in place.

However, on the whole, what makes Silk more interesting is the additional piano-work that sits nicely throughout these demos. Lovingly played and deliberately chosen on the recordings to replace that of a second guitarist.

Indie or Alternative Rock?

The keys are definitely something I hope they don’t drop altogether when returning to the studio. After all, without them, one man and his guitar could soon become another cover of “Wonderwall”. And if we’re honest, nobody really wants that these days.

While the demo sessions are filed on Soundcloud as “Alternative Rock”, in their current form Silk are most certainly a baggie indie band. Therefore, if you’re part of the local Portsmouth scene and know what you’re looking for in a support act, give the lads a gig and you won’t go far wrong.

Well, once live music rises from beyond lockdown webcasts and live shows become a proper thing again! Stay safe people… we’re almost there.
