Sigma Falls – Review: “Sigma Falls EP”

Sigma Falls EP Review

Portsmouth’s Sigma Falls have been around for the last 5 years, but their sound is strongly influenced by the music they grew up on. This mainly being the alternative rock of the late nighties/early 2000s.

Since their formation, the band have had a lot going on outside the band, family life and the like sometimes taking priority. As such “Time is Running Out” from the 2018 EP is a song about self-reflection and those life-changing decisions.

The song title may sound familiar due to the Muse hit, but this is Sigma Falls opening up about themselves. The EP has a touch of emo about it, but without the whining, making them a bit more accessible to your average listener.

If you listen to “Only the Brave” alongside say, the Used or 30 Seconds to Mars you can hear those American influences. While “Part of me” will appeal to fans of Hundred Reasons, whose UK debut album went to 10 back in 2002.

While I may be listening with a nod to songs of yesteryear, I’m sure Sigma Falls won’t be offended. After all, it’s all meant as a compliment. As for playing live, they’ve been popular on the local scene. Including appearances at festivals such as Victorious, Icebreaker and slightly further afield at the Wickham Festival.

In fact, Mr Teeth Reviews also caught the guys play the EP as part of the launch show at the Wave Maiden. While it was a more intimate show than that of the festival stage, those enjoying dinner downstairs were probably left wondering what all the noise was about.

It was, however, a chance to hear Sigma Falls perform live which is where the songs sound at their blistering best. So as we head towards the end of the year, keep an eye out for any potential shows from Sigma Falls during 2019.
