THERAPY? – PORTSMOUTH WEDGEWOOD ROOMS 29th December 2012

Opening with Joy Division cover “Isolation”, this was the old school Therapy? that most of the crowd were here for, and as such it was always going to be difficult to promote the new album “A Brief Crack of the Light” to the same reception – but this is Therapy?, never ones to have had an easy ride over the years.

The new release has some great tracks but there was a bit of a subdued response to the likes of disjointed “the Buzzing”, and although the delivery on “Get Your Dead Hand off my Shoulder” is definitely up there with the old classics such as “Teethgrinder”, it’s the latter track from 1992 that bring out the love of Therapy? from back in the day – as does “Potato Junkie” with Andy Cairns getting the crowd involved with the explicit sing along, and bassist Michael McKeegan bouncing up and down like there’s no tomorrow.

As well as the Joy Division cover, there’s also a tip of the hat to the Stooges with the “I Wanna be Your Dog” guitar riff mid set along with as great rendition of “Where Eagles Fly” by the Misfits.

However, the Misfits cover along with pulling heavily from “A Brief Crack of the Light” resulted in a couple of classic tracks being overlooked, the likes of “Church of Noise” for example.  Having said this come the encore the knives were out and several numbers from the classic “Troublegum” album were aired, proving this album and indeed Therapy? as a whole still stand the test of time, and will continue to have a beloved place in our record collection.
