Skin for a Canvas, Drop Oblivion

Review: Skin for a Canvas, Drop Oblivion

Here’s a man on a mission. Ian Mortimer has been hiding away in his timeless studio of late. Family life and recording projects may mean it’s a while since the lad has appeared on stage, but that’s not stopped the creativity.

Skin for a Canvas (feat. Dani Burnett) – Autumn Fireflies

As a live act, I first came across Ian Mortimer 5 years ago armed with his acoustic guitar and thought-provoking vocals. Playing acoustically at festivals then seemed a regular occurrence for Skin for a Canvas. However, on record, there’s a bit more to it.

Featuring Dani Burnett this track is a little more complex than one man and his guitar. Although there’s still something simplistic and naturally atmospheric about “Autumn Fireflies”. Providing a short soundtrack to those Autumn walks through fallen leaves.

Drop Oblivion (feat. Brett Daniels) – Detached

In contrast, Drop Oblivion gives Ian Mortimer the chance to rock out and stomp on the distortion. There’s probably a bit more to talk about on this track, kicking off with the big time riff that starts the tune. It’s one where you wonder which direction the full release will take, hopefully omitting the “comedy” moments from “to Hell we March”.

As for the delivery of the lyrics, if you like the sound of demons escaping from someone’s soul, then check it out. The production on the vocals makes “Detached” sound pretty immense. If however, you want a little taster of Ian Mortimer’s softer side, then keep your ear out for the unexpected break in the middle.

When it comes to what’s due next from Timeless Studio next, it’s somewhat anyone’s guess. It could be an EP under the Skin for a Canvas moniker, another full length as Drop Oblivion, or maybe production for another artist? After all, the studio is open for business, so if you want a helping hand give the dude a shout.
