PIG’S BLOOD – “PIG’S BLOOD”

Pig's Blood Review

Evil sounding death metal from the USA, Pig’s Blood release their debut full length thanks to the label Godz ov War Productions.

It’s difficult to find out too much about the American metallers, the sleeve notes are deliberately printed in dark text on a black background and there’s little to go on with online promotion.

Photographs are hard to come by, except for one of the band playing Jenga, which certainly isn’t in keeping with the band’s demonic sound. This isn’t an album to play games with, it’s unnervingly heavy and will do it’s best to make you feel uncomfortable.

There’s no let up during the 10 tracks on the self-titled CD, but persevere you must for its soon obvious Pig’s Blood aren’t going to come quietly. The guitars speed through the riffs, while the double bass drum constantly pounds your ears. The lead vocals are growled in a convincing manor and you quite rightly listen in fear.

Pigs Blood

It is however the breaks on tracks such as “Rats (this World is a Sewer)” and “Death March Insanity” that keep you coming back for more. The changes may be subtle, but they help turn Pig’s Blood from another angry death metal band to include elements of doom and grind-core.

Of course, this isn’t any huge leap across musical genres, but at least it shows creativity and gives you an excuse to throw shapes in the pit. That is if you get a chance to see Pig’s Blood live, for as far as I know they only have a couple of upcoming gigs… and they’re both the other side of the Atlantic on home soil.

It’s a good job then that on record this really is death metal worthy of being played at volume, preferably in a slaughterhouse. So if you’re a fan of brutally heavy music more than you are of talking pigs called Babe, then be prepared for puddles of blood to drip out your speakers.
