TONGUES – “TONGUES EP”

Hardcore metal from the other side of the globe, Tongues have released their debut EP into the world. Upon leaving the band Aversions Crow vocalist Collin Jeffs started his new project with former bandmate Jay Coombs on bass.

Tongues are everything hardcore fans would love, the two middle tracks in “Dead Hand” and “Worm Food” are the stand out tunes. If you want loud heavy guitars and screaming vocals, then Tongues have the answer. Switching between vocal styles, you can already picture the claws coming out, bodies flying and Jeffs storming around the place.

With the band based in Australia though, I’ve not experienced them live but having attended plenty of underground hardcore gigs, I can only but imagine.  Such with “Vermin” being just pure aggression, growls, double bass drums and would be perfect for sweaty little clubs.

The three minute of “Old Hate” crashes to a sudden end, you can feel Tongues have poured their heart, soul and guts into the EP. Maybe then, its why they introduced Matt Youkhana from fellow Australians DVSR as guest vocals, for the EP’s opener “No Solace”.

It may be the first song on the release, but I leave it to the end as it doesn’t feel quite the same as the rest of the EP. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a great track, but the rap was somewhat unexpected. Youkhana delivers it well and it distracts from the brutal assault of Jeffs voice, but maybe it shouldn’t be the EP’s opener.

That said, I can still imagine the moment in a hardcore gig when an unassuming member of the crowd takes the mic and spits out a verse before handing it back. So, they may not be a band that tour the world just yet, but if anyone wants to book Tongues for a local gig… I will meet you in the pit.
