JE DOUBLE F – “HUMAN RITES”

Hailing from the other side of the Atlantic Jeff Ritchie, aka punk-rapper JE Double F, releases his album “Human Rites”.

It’s underground DIY hip hop, all written and produced by Ritchie, with most tunes only around 1.5 minutes long. It may be a short offering but there are 15 tracks in total, creating an album showing off the skills available from the American MC.

There’s an aggressive side to the low-fi production, a combination of Death Grips meets MF Doom. The New Jersey rapper spits out the rhymes on opener “Crocodile Tears” and the likes of “Jagged Edge” are among the heavier, catchier numbers.

With each track being over almost as quickly as it begins, you can’t help but get a little frustrated. The moment you start getting into the piece, it comes to a sudden end. While there’s plenty of potential on “Human Rites”, it feels a collection of ideas, rather than the finished artefact.

Personally, I’d prefer fewer song-titles, with the concentration on making the end result sound more complete. That said, with this snappy approach JE Double F is sure to keep your ears intrigued with a modern take on classic rap music.
