HUEY AND THE NEW YORKERS – PORTSMOUTH WEDGEWOOD ROOMS 18th March 2013

It’s always a pleasure to see someone truly pleased to be on stage, and this was clearly the case with Fun Lovin’ Criminals frontman Huey Morgan from the moment he came on at the Wedge to the moment he left.

Starting the night with probably the most FLC sounding track, “Stick it to the Man” gets it funk on and this was a big part of the evenings’ proceedings with much of the funkiness coming from the keys of Pete Levin which combined with the bluesy guitar work of Chris Scianni (aka Waterside Slim) made for a more upbeat performance of the debut album “Say it to my Face”.

There was still room for the slower numbers from the album in tonight set, and although I’m sure some people in the audience were longing to hear the likes of “Scooby Snacks” from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals days it was a surprising cover of “Puppet on a String” by Sandy Shaw that provided the encore – with Huey sounding in great voice as though he was paying homage to the old American crooners rather than that of a Eurovision Song Contest winner.

So with more humble thanks to the audience it was a gig that was over all too quickly, but for those of use that love the funk we still have Fun Loving Criminals back catalogue and for those enjoying the blues check out The Tangiers Blues Band which is where this collaboration all started… but for those of us who love both, let’s hope Huey and the New Yorkers make a welcome return.
