CROWNED HEARTS PROMOTIONS – EDGE OF THE WEDGE PORTSMOUTH 12th February 2013

Stray Bullets Kill

They may not have rehearsed for a while but it didn’t show, as Stray Bullets Kill put in a solid performance with growling vocals making your rib cage shatter and frantic bass lines from the Wedgewood Rooms very own Spikey Mark, which along with duel guitars providing killer riffs was a very tight performance.

Hummune

These guys are an immense three piece from Southampton capable of making your ears bleed with their slow and insanely loud blend of Mastodon meets Prong.  Slow hypnotic grooves played through an array of effects, made it near impossible not to be moved by tracks from the debut album “Crafted in Darkness”.

…and for a band who claimed not to talk much, they dealt well with a certain bit of friendly but unwanted banter and showed they too had a sense of humour underneath the dark persona of the music.

Contra

There are some bands that you love because of their rawness, and some you love because of their ability to write great songs – Contra have both.  At times loud and in your face, but look beneath the layers and there are well crafted melodies, “When the Empire Fell” for example has a certain Weezer like quality to it yet additional backing vocals and heavy guitar riffs give other tracks a more sinister edge.

It may not have started out as the busiest Crowned Hearts event but it soon became fairly busy creating another successful and memorable night none the less, and great as always to see underground bands continue to be well represented on the local scene.
